Coach Cunningham’s thoughts on past weekend

Penn State Wrestling Fans!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you to all who came out and supported us at home this season. We had a great following this year finishing with around 4500 people on Friday. It was a memorable night for our seniors individually and collectively with a team victory. Michigan State came in and did a nice job of controlling wrist and slowing things down but most of our guys found a way to score the needed points to get their hand raised. It was not an ideal night as far as scoring a lot of points for some but sometimes there are those nights and we just have to get better because of it. Dan Vallimont reached a milestone at Penn State that not many wrestlers have reached with hitting win number 100. Cyler Sanderson who reached win number 100 earlier in the year finished with a pin and his 4th in a row. Adam Lynch(who is not a senior eligibility wise-is academically though) finished at home with another come from behind thriller. David Erwin had a tight but controlling win and Christian Harr and Brendan Herlihy were recognized for what they have given to Penn State for 4 years. These seniors have done a lot of Penn State over their careers and Cyler for his 1 year here. These guys will be hard to replace not only wrestling wise but because of the type of kids they are. Do not get me wrong their season is far from over but their home season is now done. We now look forward to a challenging match this Friday in Minnesota and then begin preparing for the Big Ten Championship that take place in Ann Arbor on March 6 and 7. We hope to see a big Fan Following there as well.

Today we also had many of our young guys wrestling in the Edinboro Open. Eight of the Eleven that went placed which is great. David Tayor-157, Jake Kemerer-165, and Quentin Wright-184 all took first place. Ed Ruth-184 lost a tight overtime bout to Quentin Wright in the Finals for a second place finish. James Vollrath-157 continues to improve with a third place finish beating Nick Fischer (who is also improving rapidly) in the third place match. Two more guys who are improving are Tom Reynolds who took fourth at 133 and James English who took fourth at 149. These guys have one more tournament and then their folk style season is over and their freestyle season begins. We are very excited about these guys and the progress they are making right now.

Thanks again for a very memorable first home season and we look forward to seeing many at Minnesota for our final dual meet of the season.

GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
