Think like God wants us to think - Monday, February 15th, 2010

Think like God wants us to think. The truth is simple. God does not deceive. His perfect advice is black and white. There is no confusion.

God is perfect. He knows everything. He knows what we need before we ask Him. He is our Father in Heaven. We are His children. You are His son or daughter. He loves you perfectly. Knowing that should give you a tremendous sense of strength, self-worth and purpose.

“Remember, my young friends, you are somebody! You are a child of promise. You are a man of might. You are a son of God, endowed with faith, gifted with courage, and guided by prayer. Your eternal destiny is before you. The Apostle Paul speaks to you today as he spoke to Timothy long years ago: “Neglect not the gift that is in thee. … O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust.” (1 Tim. 4:14; 1 Tim. 6:20.)” — Thomas S. Monson in his speech “Go For It!”

God’s main objective is to help his children (us) live forever with Him.

God told Moses that his work and glory was “To bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39).

He is always there waiting and wanting to help us. After you have a kid you understand how our Father in Heaven can feel this way. This life is just a test and our mission to become like our Lord God. We show God and our Lord Jesus Christ how much we love them by trying to be like Them. That means to live and think like Them.

So let’s do it! Or atleast give it our best attempt.

The challenge is that we are far from perfect beings and that there is this nasty adversary out there called Satan who wants us to fail. Satan wants us to be miserable just like his. Satan is smart and relentless and has billions of his followers helping him. It is a war. A war far more important then any war ever fought between men. The war between good and evil has eternal consequences.

Everything good comes from God. Everything bad, comes from somewhere else. Our mission should be to think like God. Fear, doubt, jealousy, anger and every other negative feeling is in contrast to how God wants us to think. Opposition will always be with us. The battle between good and evil and positive and negative is fought daily. You will have negative and doubtful thoughts daily. That is a certainty. What you do with those negative thoughts is the key. Do you welcome these thoughts in, embrace them and feed them? Or do you recognize them for what they are and replace them? Those qualities are not God-like and oppose what we are taught from Him.
“At times, all of us let that enemy of achievement—even the culprit, self-defeat—dwarf our aspirations, smother our dreams, cloud our vision, and wreck our lives. The enemy’s voice whispers in our ears, “I can’t do it.” “I’m too little.” “Everyone is watching.” “I’m nobody.”
—Thomas S. Monson in his speech “Go For It!”

There is no challenge that we can not overcome.

“There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.” (1 Cor. 10:13)

There is no obstacle we can’t overcome. Some people are given more difficult challenges and circumstances then other people but we are all judged according to what we have been given. The goal is the same for everyone; do the best you can with what you have! I read about a person who questioned why he was put in an abusive home with bleak hope. The answer he was given was that God knew he was strong enough to bear this heavy burden and that he could break the cycle of abuse for the future generations of his family. That is inspiring! To think that we can take our circumstances and improve them for our children and their children is an awesome opportunity.

God judges us on our effort and what’s in our heart. The world judges us on results. Satan wants us to focus on results. When you really break down what life is all about and what the ultimate goal of this life is, it should free you up to really attack your potential. We were not sent to earth to worry about failing and what other people think about us. God has given us a gift and He expects us to do the most we can with it. It is that simple. Take the life that you have been given and do the most you can with it. Don’t allow yourself to pervert the facts of truth. The truth is simple. However, the truth is not easy. The truth requires accountability, dedication, hard work, and honesty to name a few. But the truth is based on effort. That is what we forget.

John Adams said, “Duty is ours and results are God’s.”

It’s that simple. If you are creating some false reality in your mind and putting pressure on yourself to get results, that is your choice. However real it feels to you, it is not real. When we think in contrast to how God wants us to think, we greatly limit our potential. Our Lord God sent His son Jesus Christ to account for our sins because He knew we couldn’t make it on our own. God is saying, “Do the best you can, and I will make up the difference.”

Knowing that this is our Creator’s expectation of us, what do we have to lose? What are we afraid of? That is freedom to attack your goals. When we choose to think in worldly terms and let the world pervert our attempt to be the best we can be, it is putting the world before God. That’s not good. Thankfully, God is very patient and merciful with us.

If we just trust God and think as He wants us to think, we will go much farther in whatever we are doing. That’s the tricky part. We have these flaws in our brains that we allow to hold us back. God is peace. After I won the Olympics the overwhelming feeling I had was peace.

I often reference the “Parable of the Talents” from the Bible. Jesus taught that it doesn’t matter how many talents we are given, what matters is what we do with the talents we have. In the parable, one of the servants buried his talent in the earth because he was afraid of what might happen if he lost his talent. Jesus was angry with him and things didn’t look so good for the future of that servant.

We bury our talent when we worry about what might happen if we try and fail. We greatly limit our talent when we look at the talent from worldly eyes. By worldly eyes I mean we are focusing on results. We worry about results because we are worried how other people view us. That’s when we worry about making mistakes, expectations, and all of that fun stuff. God judges us on effort and we should judge ourselves that same way. When we do focus on things through worldly eyes we are choosing to not listen to God. This is tough world, especially when we don’t listen to the one who knows all.

We live in a culture of criticism. The majority of people want to tear other people down. Technology these days makes that really easy to do. Look at the message boards that are so popular these days as one example.

It takes a very strong person to not criticize other people.

One of the 10 Commandments is clear on this point “Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” The point here is not for me to criticize people for criticizing people. That wouldn’t be very smart. The point is don’t worry about criticism or potential criticism. See things for what they really are.

The only thing that matters is what God thinks. People are people, don’t give some person with an agenda sitting in his basement in his tighty whities eating cheetos and smoking a cigarette, who is writes through a secret screen name any power over you. Overcome the world.

Be smart, be wise and listen to God, and His counsel will set you free.

God has the answer and God is the answer!

Attack your goals!
