progress?? - Monday, May 25th, 2009 To stay ahead and make progress with the sport of wrestling we need to copy other successful sports. You know the quote that says something like there aren’t any new ideas. Well I think the same thing holds true in sports. We don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Let’s learn from other people’s successes and failures and make progress. We know that if we’re standing still we are falling behind. Just meeting the status quo is not good enough. We need to make progress and we need a plan to make that happen. Let’s look at soccer, let’s look at basketball and other sports and steal ideas. I have thought for some time that wrestling needs to create a national youth program. We need to start at the grass roots and build from the bottom up. I have a lot of ideas in this area and have had conversations with key people to get the ball rolling. Are there other things that can be done? I think so. I think we need to tweak the rules in college wrestling. We need to make the rules more exciting. I have blogged on my thoughts before. The mindset needs to change. It seems that we keep the sport small by relying on only a few people to make decisions. I believe wrestling can be a consumer sport and we can grow. We need new ideas and different tactics. Wrestling could be promoted as an extreme sport. Wrestling could be marketed to parents as the ultimate form of self defense. The wrestlers in MMA have shown the world that wrestling is the most effective martial art. Let’s use what we have. We all know how incredible wrestling is for developing our youth. Youth wrestling needs to be as popular as youth soccer. It needs to be available in every community and the program needs to be recreational. What my dad did in Heber City, Utah is what we need on a national level. Working on it.
